5-Adult Education and Vocational Training

I was impressed to learn about the many opportunities now offered in the Adult Education and Vocational Training Department at the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board. To retrospect to my high school days, some 30 years ago, the mindset was that if you were not doing well in school or did not want to continue your education, you automatically would learn a trade or enter the labor market.

Nowadays we notice that choosing adult education and vocational training is as important as any other career. It’s a great alternative for students of all ages, gender, and creed.

But, do we as parents understand this 21st century dynamics? Do we favor traditional higher education as opposed to vocational training? How many of us parents support our children to go into a vocational trade as we do for education in CEGEP or university?

The article written by Lisa Cipriani, who interviewed Heather Halman, Director of Adult Education and Vocational Training, and the two Centre Directors, Gina Persechino and Jules Goulet, helps us all better understand the importance that vocational training plays nowadays.

The Laval Families Magazine team wishes all of our readers, families, and friends a happy, healthy, peaceful and joyful 2014!
