What sets Lower Canada College apart as a kindergarten-grade 12 school is an emphasis on co-curricular activities—an integral part of the student experience. LCC’s co-curricular offerings are vast and complement students’ academic program, as opposed to being ‘extra’ or ‘on top of’ their studies.

“Our co-curricular programming is an opportunity for all students to learn something new about themselves,” says Michele Owen, Director of Student Life at LCC. “The main focus is on building connections and relationships as part of their well-being, while having a balanced school life experience.”

At LCC, education extends beyond the classroom and students are encouraged to take part in a variety of activities, clubs, athletics, leadership and service opportunities. To accommodate students’ busy schedules, activities are offered in the early morning before classes, during lunch hour or after school. The majority of these activities are run by school staff, making the connection to teachers even stronger.

The offerings are so extensive that oftentimes students will have to make difficult choices. Participate in debating or Model UN? Seize a leadership position on student council, compete in a robotics competition or advance the school’s commitment to sustainability by joining the Green Team?

The same rings true for athletics programs, with a large variety of options. Chris Viau, Athletics Director at LCC, says that about 85 per cent of LCC’s students are involved with a sports team. “Being part of a team really creates a sense of belonging, of being part of something that is bigger than yourself,” says Viau. “It teaches students about time management, organization, teamwork [and] how to interact with your peers and others whether you win or lose.”

When it comes to the arts, students at LCC are provided with an outlet to express themselves, build self-esteem, cultivate social skills and learn discipline and teamwork. With dedicated spaces for Junior, Middle and Senior School levels, they can participate in visual arts, music programs, theatre, choir and so much more. The Fab Lab is where learning comes to life, quite literally, in a lab equipped with everything from electronic equipment, prototyping materials, sewing and textiles supplies—in short, everything creative students need to take innovative ideas and bring them to life in physical form.

“Part of life is taking risks and learning to collaborate with others,” says Owen. “Through our co-curricular programs, students learn to ask questions, be caring and considerate of others. The key is striking a balance between academics and developing empathy towards others.”
