Summer’s almost here, which means that many kids are going away to summer camp. But, going on a trip is stressful enough, and making sure to pack properly only adds to the hassle of leaving home. Some of us over pack, while others pack lightly and realize they’re missing something. Here’s how to make summer camp packing simple and easy so you and your child have one less thing to worry about!

Rain Gear
Camp is definitely an adventure and adventures are unpredictable. The weather is no exception to this rule. Since your child will likely be outside for a large part of their camping experience, it is best to prepare for extreme weather. There’s no need to go overboard though. A portable poncho and a pair of rain boots should do the trick. This precaution can prevent discomfort without getting in the way of outdoor fun.

Toiletries
While most camps are equipped with the basics, it can be good for your child to bring some of the comforts of home with them. Having their usual toothpaste and shampoo can go a long way in ensuring their hygienic routine remains unchanged. You should also include some bandages and antibiotic cream to avoid infection from minor cuts and scrapes.

Sunscreen and Bug Spray
These two items can be lifesavers. The great outdoors are not always very kind on the skin. Long days often involve heavy UV exposure. So, make sure to pack some sunscreen and more importantly, convince your child to apply it regularly. The woods can also be unforgiving when it comes to bug bites. So, before it’s time to sit by the campfire and roast marshmallows, applying a generous amount of bug spray is a safe bet.

A Variety of Clothes
Although it’s summer, mornings and evenings in the country are often quite chilly. Fluctuating temperatures require some extra attention when packing. Make sure to pack t-shirts and shorts along with a sweater and a pair of comfortable pants. It also never hurts to bring extra socks and underwear. You never know when you’ll need them!

Personal Items
While camp should act as an escape from everyday life, there is nothing wrong with your child bringing along some personal items. For some children, this can mean packing their favourite book, a camera or even a music device. It is important, of course, that these items (especially electronics) do not take away from the experience, but rather provide some light entertainment while being a reminder that home is not too far away.

Hopefully this checklist has been helpful. Perhaps it even acted as a friendly reminder to discuss summer camp with your children. In the end, the most important thing your child can bring to camp with them is a positive attitude and an open mind. The experiences had and the friendships made on this adventure will serve as lifelong memories.
