Some parents strongly believe that their child’s academics will improve with time. Others choose to seek tutoring programs which may not always be the only solution. Tutoring may help until children reach a plateau; this may happen because repetitiveness for some children overloads the working memory, not leaving enough capacity to learn.

The content is usually removed from working memory because the same material keeps being reintroduced as it happens with intensive tutoring. The brain diverts attention away from working memory, shuts down motivation and shuts down the ability to remember. The working memory capacity is limited. Our brain tries to use it efficiently by limiting the time that any particular material can stay in working memory.

We recently worked with a young girl who had been tutored for several years. Academically, she had seen little to no progress. Her reading and comprehension skills were lagging behind the rest of her peers. Her mom stressed that she could not read with fluency, accuracy and within an acquired rate. Due to her slow reading process, she was overloading her “working memory” with simple words that she couldn’t translate into meaning. This automatically compromised her comprehension.

At our centre, her mom found the help she specifically needed. Through our devoted sessions alongside our specialists and the support of the Cellfield/LIPS/Neurofeedback programs, she was able to become a fluent reader. By acquiring phonemic accuracy, she is now using her working memory capacity for comprehension. Reading needs to be taught and mastered layer by layer. One starts with simple skills, then working to higher levels. Once mastered, the brain files these skills away in the subconscious, retrieving them whenever they are needed. This automatically leaves working memory free to concentrate on higher level reading skills like comprehension.

H.O.P.E.'s mission is to get to the root of the cause, thus permitting effective tutoring to take place. Should your child be resistant to tutoring, we offer alternative methods that he or she may need. Our specialists look forward to welcoming you at our center.
